Short answer
There is no single ranking for AI search, so no single number can tell you whether your business appears. Measure three things separately:
- Observed mentions and citations: run a fixed set of real buyer questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI experiences on a regular schedule, and log whether your business is named and which sources are cited.
- Search performance: impressions, clicks and queries in Google Search Console, including its generative AI reports where your property has them.
- Traffic and conversions: visits from AI platforms in Google Analytics 4, and the inquiries and bookings they produce.
Why AI visibility is hard to measure
A traditional search result is a list of links that most people see in a similar order. An AI answer is generated for each question, and it can change with the wording, the user, the location and the day. Two people asking the same question can receive different answers.
That is why we treat AI answers as observations, not rankings. A careful, repeated log of what the answer engines actually say is more reliable than any single score.
1. Observed mentions and citations
This is the most direct measure, and you can start it this week.
- Build a fixed question set. Use the questions real buyers ask before they contact a provider, such as "Who provides AI exam readiness for community banks in New Jersey?" or "What is the best way to generate B2B leads for a staffing firm?" Include questions that name your category, your location and your specific services.
- Keep the wording identical. Changing the question changes the answer, so the set only works as a trend if it stays the same.
- Run it on a schedule. Monthly is enough for most businesses. Use the same engines each time: ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- Log the same fields every time.
| Field | Example |
|---|---|
| Date | October 9, 2026 |
| Engine | Perplexity |
| Question | Who helps community banks prepare for AI examinations? |
| Business mentioned? | Yes, third of four firms named |
| Sources cited | Your service page, an industry article, a competitor site |
| Competitors named | The other firms in the answer |
| Accuracy | Description correct, location missing |
Over a few months, this log shows whether you are being named more often, which of your pages are cited, which competitors appear alongside you and whether the engines describe you accurately.
2. Search performance in Google Search Console
Search Console reports impressions, clicks, average position and the queries that bring people to your site. Google states that impressions from its AI features are included in the overall Performance report.
In June 2026, Google began rolling out separate generative AI performance reports covering AI Overviews and AI Mode. At launch they show impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates, but not clicks, and they are being made available to sites incrementally rather than all at once. If your property has them, they show which of your pages appear in AI features. If not, track the overall report and watch for the new one.
3. Traffic and conversions in Google Analytics 4
When a visitor clicks through from an AI platform, GA4 can often identify the source. ChatGPT adds a utm_source tag to many of the links it shows, and other platforms pass a referrer. Group these sources in a custom channel so you can see AI-referred visits together, then follow them through to inquiries and bookings.
Expect this number to understate reality. Some AI-driven visits arrive without a tag or referrer and are recorded as direct traffic, and many people read an AI answer and later search for your name instead of clicking.
What not to rely on
- A single "AI visibility score" from a tool whose method you cannot see. Ask which questions, engines, dates and locations it uses.
- One-off screenshots. One answer on one day proves very little in either direction.
- Traffic alone. Being cited and named builds trust even when nobody clicks.
How we apply this
Our AI search visibility (AEO) engagements report these three measures separately, using tools you own wherever possible: Google Search Console, Google Analytics 4 and a fixed buyer-question log run on a regular schedule. Engagements run for a minimum of 90 days, because answer engines take time to reflect changes.
